28mm Punic War Midgard

Today, we were lacking Rhod and Phil who were elsewhere! So Tony brought his 28mm Punic war armies down and took the Romans against Lawrence and myself with the Carthaginians.

Tony deployed with a long line of Hastati and Principes, screened by Velites, with the Triarii behind each wing, all his cavalry was on his right.

We deployed opposite, of course!
We had 'Omens' and as instructed by Lawrence, I managed to roll a '5', the best roll where we just gained 2 Reputation Points!
I asked for a small command, so took the right wing with 4 units of Gauls (Fierce but fragile!), a unit of Numidian cavalry and of Balearic slingers.
Lawrence had the Libyan Spearmen backed with Spanish infantry, an Elephant, Spanish, Gallic and Numidian cavalry with more Balearic slingers.
I faced Legionarii and Velites only.
The Libyans faced more Legionarii and Velites...
...Their right was their Roman and Allied Cavalry.
Although confident, Lawrence and I were wary of the Roman infantry.
Lawrence led his Balearics and Numidians through a wood (Yes, we forgot to put the trees in, Doh!).
The slingers made the Roman horse retreat.
I flung my Numidians round the Roman flank, and had my Balearics engage the Velites at long range...
Amazingly I damaged them at that range!
I was hoping my skirmishers would delay the Roman infantry from getting at my Gauls.
The Romans detached some Hastati to counter my Numidians.
On their right, the Roman cavalry flung out to the right, probably to avoid having Numidians on their flank?!
The Roman infantry went deep, leaving their Cavalry unsupported.
My slingers kept up an accurate fire...
Those hapless Velites ran for their lives!
Elsewhere the Velites were skirmishing with the Africans, One unit retreated causing stamina loss to them and the supporting Iberians!!!
The Roman right changed their minds, and sent some heavy infantry to counter the Carthaginian Cavalry.
Lawrence used his 'Hold Fast' trait to get the African spearmen back to full strength, and they charged the Velites, who both failed to evade! Even their Hero failed to get them back!!! They were naturally destroyed.
In our centre, the legions charged Lawrence's centre.
They tried to attack my Gauls, but were just short of contact!!!
My Numidians were skirmishing with another Legionary unit, keeping them from reinforcing their attacks elsewhere.
The Roman cavalry charged the Numidians, who evaded successfully.
My Belearics decided to try and help my Gauls out.
In the centre, both sides won one fight, while the middle drew!
Lawrence's Numidians stayed skirmishing with the Roman Cavalry.
Their Allied cavalry supported the Legionarii.
On the other wing, my Numidians were round the Romans' back!
Two of my Gallic warrior units charged the Romans, the other two moved out to give support.
On Lawrence's wing his Elephant helped some Spanish defeat a Legionary unit.
My Gauls took heavy damage, but won against both Roman units!
The Libyans were losing badly next door to them, though.
Lawrence got the Roman cavalry in a vice.
A unit of Spanish in the centre broke.
Our centre was being broken through!
I sent in the rest of my Gauls and moved my Balearics to prevent them retreating.
On Lawrence's wing a charge by the Numidians and Gallic Horse broke the Roman cavalry.
Lawrence threw well!! these from a total of 16 dice!!!
His Spanish cavalry had to fight alone against the Allied cavalry, but they won easily too!
My leftmost Gallic warband was broken by a Roman charge.
My other units were beating the Romans, though...
...even their Triarii!
The Elephant rampage continued!
But another Libyan unit broke!
The Numidians on my wing finally damaged those legionaries.
At this point, we had to check Reputation...
The Romans were -3 and Carthage was +5.
Hannibal Roolz!

It was a fun game, but I felt for Tony who threw dreadful dice especially at the start of the game!!! We have all been there!!!
