Today we returned to Midgard using Tony's Etruscans against a Camillan Roman army. There were just 3 players, I got the Romans, Tony and Lawrence the forces of Veii.
I got to be defender!
The setup at game start, Romans to the left.
My left, with Allied Cavalry supported by Leves (Javelinmen)
Next in my Hastati backed by Principes and Triarii, with some allied infantry.
In the Centre, with the Consul, more Legionarii.
My weak right had the Roman Equites with a single unit of Leves.
Facing these, the Etruscans had a unit of Light Javelinmen, and one of Archers, as well as their solo unit of cavalry, supported by Samnites.
In the centre, they had Hoplites of various quality.
Their right had 2 more units of Light Troops, one of which was Slingers.
I now did my 2 unit redeployment, swapping the Allied cavalry to the rear with some more Leves taking their place.
The Etruscans began to spread out to the left.
Their Light Infantry extended their right - facing the rough ground.
I responded extending my right a little.
On my left I sent my Leves to occupy the rough ground.
My centre stayed back.
The Etruscan Cavalry were just in range and charged, easily beating my Roman Cavalry, despite their supports!
My roll for Risk to Hero (a level 1 Hero)
Exit one Roman Hero!
The Roman Cavalry only had one Stamina left and threw a '1'.
My Principes and Leves charged and destroyed the victorious Etruscan Cavalry.
At turn end, the right was stable.
The centers were steady.
On the left, I had failed to destroy the Etruscan Light Infantry , only driving the Slingers back with 1 Stamina.
Tony recovered them with a 'Hold Fast' token.
The Slingers shot and destroyed one of my Leve units, another break when pushed back!
The Etruscan Javelinmen damaged my Leves too!
In the centre, we had advanced, and I got 2 legionary units in, the 3rd failed twice!!!
The Etruscan Archers advanced to annoy my Leves.
Part of the front remained back.
My first Legionary unit lost, and was pushed back despite having 2 supporting units, the other only managed a draw!
I had brought my 3rd Leve unit to help on the left, and it broke the Etruscan Light Javelinmen, but was damaged itself.
The Etruscan hoplites charged my Leves, who failed to evade, leading to bothe Leve units breaking!!!
The Etruscans charged another unit in against my solo Hastati unit, and broke it.
I did nothing, 1 hit out of 12.
My Leves on the right were lucky and drove the Etruscan Archers off table!
In the centre, although I had sent in a Legionary unit to split the combats, I lost big time to Light Javelinmen!
I now had an Etruscan Hoplite unit charge 2 of my Spear units, which despite support only drew.
Then I rolled my best roll of the day!
A hastati unit charged and broke their Etruscan opponents!
Unfortunately, 2 Samnite units broke a Hastati unit on my right.
I rolled 2 Hits out of 14 dice on the left, but we had made a mistake with the Etruscan dice so had to redice...
...Exactly the same result!
My Italian Allies broke and ran.
The supporting unit took damage too!!!
On my right, the Etruscan Javelinmen had tried to kill my Leves by shooting in their rear, but I evaded, and tried to turn to face the Veiiani.
On my right, I manoeuvered to face off two Etruscan units trying to outflank me.
I was winning in the right centre, but had 2 against a single good Etruscan 'Devoted' unit.
I was being pushed back in the left centre.
I was losing on the left too...
So that was it!
I had -1 Rep, the Etruscans +10.
Camillus would not be pleased!!!
