Today, we had a game of Midgard using my friend Tony's Late Republican Romans against a Pontic army of the 1st Mithridatic war.
(NOTE: Tony didn't have the correct figures for the Pontic and Sarmatian cavalry, just in case you are confused!)
As normal, we randomised who was playing who, and it ended up as Lawrence and Rhod as the Romans, while I had Tony with the Pontics, I have to admit it was nice to be anything but the Romans for me!
The table at game start, Romans to the left.
The Roman right under Lawrence, Heavy Cavalry and Moorish lights, and several units of veteran Legionarii.
The Roman centre was more Legionarii!
On their left near a wood, they had some Light Javelinmen and some Light Archers under Rhod.
Tony took our right, with Light Infantry and Cavalry, plus the Ex Slave Phalangites!
I had the 'Brazen Shields' Pikemen.
I also had the massed Pontic cavalry, including some Iatzyges Sarmatian lancers, Skythian Light Horse Archers, Scythed Chariots, and 2 units of standard Javelin and shield cavalry.
At the end of turn 1, My Sarmartae had advanced facing the Moorish light cavalry.
Tony had advanced the Slave Phalanx, I kept the Chalcaspides (Bronze Shields), back, to dissuade the Roman Legions from outflanking them.
On my right, the Light Infantry was fencing with Cretan Archers!
The Romans had kept their Heavy Cavalry back, seeming none too keen to try their chances against my Sarmatians and Scythed Chariots!
The Roman centre was keeping together, as they awaited the Pontic Phalanx.
The Roman left.
Lawrence advanced a Legionary unit to threaten my Scythed Chariots...
...and my Sarmatians!
I advanced my Phalangitae to better support the flank of Tony's Phalanx.
Tony tried to engage the greater number of Roman Light Infantry!
The Roman Legions 'Got the bounce' on Tony's Phalanx, damaging 2 Taxeis for no loss themselves.
His third Taxeis took more damage, but at least caused some damage to the Romans.
One of Tony's rolls, he needed 5s and 6s.
Rhod's hits in return!
Back on my Pontic left wing, I had retreated my Sarmatians and Chariots and diverted a Pike Taxeis to cover the flank.
Rhod's light archers pushed back the Pontic Javelinmen, but Tony's other unit drove back the Roman Velites.
Tony moved his allied infantry to threaten the Legionary flank.
One of my Phalanx Taxeis was holding a gap in our line.
I felt the time had come to attack, my Sarmatians had spotted a Roman cavalry unit, and the Scythed Chariots charged a Legionary unit.
My Horse archers pushed against the Moors, I had a Hero with 'On my command, unleash hell' and I rolled a 6!
Unfortunately, my 12 dice rolled only 2 hits! Epic Fail!!!
Tony's Pontic javelinmen broke their opponents!
But Rhod's Archers destroyed Tony's other one!
My Sarmatians charged, and I got a typical Sarmatian roll! (being Knights with 'Thunderous Charge' they hit on a 4!
The Roman Cavalry were broken!
However, I was still worried by the Roman Legions!
My Phalangites moved forward, to add support to this attack. Unfortunately I rolled awfully for the Scythed Chariots which broke disgracefully!
Tony was unable to charge the flank of the Legions!
In the centre, one of the Slave units broke!
The Romans in the centre charged one of my Phalanx Taxeis and got a draw, but the Romans were down 2 Stamina to my 1!
The Moorish cavalry charged and nearly broke, my Skythians, but they held on.
Our centre was holding still, though stretched.
Poor Tony's Phalanx was losing badly.
Amazingly, the single Roman light infantry unit was able to hold all of the Pontic units in check!
Their missiles damaged the Light Cavalry just as one of Tony's Phalanx Taxeis broke!
I charged a unit of Pontic Cavalry into a Legionary unit, killing the Hero with it!
Both sides had 1 Stamina loss, the battle continued!
My Sarmatians charged the second Roman cavalry unit, and boke it in one charge too!!!
Our Phalanx was under severe stress!
Tony's flank was still in confusion.
This allowed 3 Legionary units to break the last of the brave ex-slaves!
My Pontic cavalry broke the Legionaries they had charged.
My Skythians and the Moors wiped each other out!!
We had to stop there at the end of turn 5, and it was a draw!!!
What a hard game it was, but fun!
