Today, we had Ezza visiting from London, and he decided to join our happy band for another Midgard game! I was just glad to be back after a bad bout of Covid!!!
It was fine as we had 5 players already, and this evened up the sides!
Lawrence, Rhod and myself got Romans (do I ever get to be anything else???), while Phil, Ezza and Tony got to be Carthage. They also got to be attackers in this game.
The battlefield at game start, Romans to the left.
Lawrence took the Consul, with the Roman and Allied cavalry, Allied Infantry and 2 units of Gauls, held back on the right.
I had the centre, with the Allied Legions.
Rhod held our left with the Roman Legions.
Facing Rhod, Phil had Elephants, some light infantry and Numidian cavalry.
In their centre, they had Spanish Infantry and Punic infantry. To the left of the road, Ezza had the African Infantry.
Tony on their left had light infantry (and Balearic slingers)... and Spanish and Punic Cavalry.
In the first turn the Roman Velites raced to claim the wood on our left before the Carthaginian light troops did!
The centres both held position.
Facing Lawrence, the Carthaginian Heavy Cavalry trundled forward, supporting their light infantry in the wood on our right.
Lawrence moved his Roman Cavalry forward.
This allowed me to detach my Velites to support Lawrence on the right.
The Carthaginian infantry moved forwards.
The Punic Light Infantry raced into the wood, leaving one unit to face Roman Legionarii who were moving to guard our left flank.
Amazingly both fights were drawn, both sides taking a Stamina Loss!
In the next phase the infantry continued fighting, but the Numidians were broken in the wood!
This allowed our victorious unit to outflank the other Punic Javelinmen. Unfortunately the unit out of the wood damaged a Hastati unit.
This, of course, broke them.
Lawrence was intentionally keeping back from the wood on his side of the table, waiting for the enemy to come to him!
The Punic Heavy Cavalry obliged, led on by infantry in the centre.
The Romans retreated slightly to keep the Punics out of charge range.
Th last right wing Punic Javelin unit was trying to fend off the surrounding Romans.
Both Roman Vele units were damaged, so were wary of charging the Punic Skirmishers.
The Romans caught the Punics in a V, so if a shooting result went against them they would retreat into an enemy unit and lose a Stamina point.
As it was, Rhod's javelins caused a Stamina loss anyhow!
How long would the centres stay apart?
My Velites had got to Lawrence's side to help deal with the Punic Light Infantry.
The said Punics were suitably worried.
Another Javelin volley destroyed the last of Phil's Javelin units.
He charged his Punic infantry - and with some great rolling almost broke their Roman opponents!
Rhod sent another unit to try and recover the situation.
I now charged across the line, as the whole Punic line had advanced.
My Velites advanced on the Punic Light Infantry, protecting the Gallic troops behind.
Lawrence charged his Roman and Allied Cavalry into the Carthaginian horse.
Those Punic infantry broke that Roman unit!
Along the line, a single Poeni unit was destroyed by the Roman Legion.
My Allied Legions were doing well in most of their combats.
My Hero drove a Punic unit back into the Gauls behind, causing damage to both!
Lawrence's Allied Cavalry failed, and were broken by the Punic Cavalry
The Victorious Punic Infantry were being held by the unit who had forlornly come to the rescue!
My Hero's unit rolled well and broke the African infantry unit and the Gauls behind!
Along the road, Rhod was keeping the Punics in check, just.
On our right, the Punic Heavy cavalry had overwhelmed the Roman Cavalry.
I had moved a Hastati unit to attack a Gallic support unit, but they failed to charge 3 times!!! - My Hero charged the flank of another unit pushing back my Principes.
To their left, one of my badly damaged units managed to break their equally damaged Punic opponents!
On our left, the Elephants were being kept in check by the Roman Light Infantry.
In the centre, I was fighting desperately to hold on.
On our right, the Punic Cavalry was threatening.
The Carthaginian Cavalry charged with a Spanish unit, but they both lost.
That cursed Punic Citizen unit broke another Roman Legionary unit!
In the centre, one Allied Legionary unit broke when the Gauls attacked, but the Gauls were destroyed too!
The outflanked Spanish unit finally broke too!
The Hero with them stayed in the battle, I wonder why?
Despite a hard battle, Lawrence's infantry broke their opponents...
...and were soon followed by the Punic Cavalry.
At the end of turn 6...
My Legion had finally charged that supporting Gallic unit, and got beaten back!!!
My Velites caught and destroyed a Spanish Javelin unit.
Rome had 4 Reputation remaining...
...The Carthaginians -4!
A good victory for the Roman Republic, but I think the real victory was everyone enjoyed the game!!!
