Today we had yet another non-Midgard day playing American Revolution (Using my rules!)
For a change, we randomised who got what army, and I got the English army, while Rhod got my Hessian allies, while Phil led the American forces. As expected, Phil managed to outroll us and got the initiative, being able to deploy in both flank sectors and after we had deployed, but we got choice of table side!
The armies deployed! English to the right!
Phil had a weak right, just 2 units of light infantry guarding the flank of his Marylanders.
The centre was certainly strong enough! All his guns were placed here!
His left was strongest, the Virginia and New Jersey regiments with Light Dragoons and 2 more light infantry units.
He started his right wing forward to try and seize the wood!
His centre advanced unevenly, what was he planning?
His Light Dragoons (Sheldon's) led an advance on their left to seize the hill.
The Virginians advanced in support on their right.
I sent my light infantry forward to try and secure the wood, and sweep the pesky rebel light troops away!
In the centre, I advanced slowly, so as not to outrun my flanks attack.
Rhod sent some Feldjägers to hold the farm, supporting them on the flank with some Infantry.
Rhod got his Feldjägers on top of the hill first, could they hold it?
Nope! The 2nd Light Dragoons charged and the Feldjägers retreated in haste!
Sheldon's Horse tried to charge in pursuit into the Hessian infantry, but took a volley, it should have killed more!!!
The cavalry barreled into the infantry and drew!, both sides were now disordered!
Phil found his Light Infantry on the hill were a bit of a hindrance as his Continentals tried to get forward.
The 2nd Canadians and Delawares prepared to attack the farm.
As they advanced, the Feldjägers took a toll with their rifles.
The American centre seemed happy to stay safely away from combat like mine!
I had detached the 17th Light Dragoons to support Rhod, retrospectively I should have kept them with my left!
I pushed forward on my left, but it took longer than I needed it to be!
I advanced two regiments to engage Phil's advanced Continentals.
Rhod was doing his best to fortify the farm.
The fight on the hill continued, only the Brave, Competent commander (Probably Sullivan) kept the Light Dragoons in the fight.
My advanced Regiments got a VERY good volley into the Americans!
Phil engaged the Hessians with his Light Infantry, quite effectively.
The Americans had charged the Feldjägers, who again retreated in disorder.
The Virginia regiments were pushing through against the beleaguered Hessian regiments!
The front line took casualties from the enfilading fire too...
...they fell back in disorder, disrupting the units behind!
Phil's advanced regiments had retreated in confusion from my fire...unfortunately, the Hessian guns were silenced by the American fire at the same time!
As they rallied behind the line, the heavy battery took a toll on my troops, who I withdrew soon after.
On my left, the American Light Infantry were putting up a good fight.
Even disordered, Rhod's Grenadiers continued shooting down the brave American Dragoons.
When they were rallied by their general they finished the job!
Rhod's regiments were getting plastered in the farm.
My centre regiments were out of effective range now, only taking light damage from the American artillery.
Meanwhile, on my left, my 'Light Bobs' beat their American opposite numbers...
...who routed!
The Americans were pushing through the farm now.
In the centre, my guns were now able to play on the Continentals.
In the farm, the Hessians counter attacked.
They were repelled by steady American volleys.
The artillery swept away the the survivors.
The American centre hit my centre too, so the artillery duel was not all one way!
The Americans took the farm, and fired from cover into Rhod's supporting regiments.
My regulars swept into the second American Light Infantry, who put up a strong defence.
On our right, two New Jersey regiments tried to outflank Rhod's narrow frontage, but were countered by the Feldjägers.
On our left, my regiments were sweeping into the American flank
My Light Infantry was harassing the Continentals.
The American centre was still getting hits on my regiments.
This was the end of the game! My left was winning...
...The centres were stable...
...Rhod saved us a draw as his Grenadiers forced the Virginians to retreat in disorder!
That was close!
