Today we returned to Wings of Glory WW1, and as Rhod had only done dogfights before, I set up a Balloon Busting scenario for him to try, Rhod volunteered to take the Nieuport 16 with Le Prieur rockets, while Lawrence chose Georges Guynemer 's SPAD VII, I took the RFC's No 26 squadron SPAD.
The solo system ran the Boche, with 4 Trench mounted MG's (I had been given 2 77mm guns which I put on the rifle only cards!) - they were defended by 2 outdated Halberstadt DII and a Fokker EIII.
The target for today.
I randomly placed the Germans who ended mostly on the right, facing Lawrence's SPAD.
I was on our right, detailed with dealing with the Halberstadt on the enemy's left.
That plane was far left, so I would not need to engage the Archie battery.
Rhod's Rocket machine set up opposite the Drachen.
Lawrence's French SPAD took the left...
...he had two enemy machines to deal with, at least he had speed.
We were to try and keep the Germans off the Nieuport.
The French SPAD closed rapidly.
The two sides passed without getting a shot in.
So far, so good, the slower Nieuport closed on the Drachen.
I passed my enemy too.
I 'Immelmanned' hoping to catch the Halberstadt as it turned.
The Nieuport didn't shoot his rockets, but chose to use his gun instead.
Lawrence (Guynemer) managed to turn faster than his opponents.
He was soon hassling a Halberstadt!
Rhod's Nieuport had started a small fire on the Drachen! - but instead of passing the Balloon, he turned towards the trenches!
The Halberstadt managed to escape my cunning attack!
The fire on the Drachen was growing, as the ground crew continued to pull it towards the ground and safety.
Lawrence was easily evading the German attacks.
Rhod's Nieuport raked the German trench.
He got enough to destroy it!
I turned trying to get on the Halberstadt's tail.
Lawrence 'Immelmanned' to face his pursuers.
I decided it was better to give up my pursuit, and wrong footed my German as I cut off and headed for the Drachen.
Lawrence ended up nose to nose with the Eindecker, but jammed his guns!
He passed the Germans trying to clear them.
I was well on my way, driving my Hispano-Suiza engine to its max!
As Rhod approached the next Archie battery, he got hit!
He tried to Immelmann away, but it just left him open to further short range fire!
The brave Nieuport fell to earth.
I was far ahead of any pursuit now.
Lawrence dived through the Germans, also heading for the Balloon.
The poor German I had been fighting finally turned in pursuit!
Lawrence outpaced the other two Germans.
The Drachen was half way down now, we needed to kill it first!
I had nothing to fear from my pursuer!
I timed my turn to allow Lawrence to attack first.
His first burst caused no damage.
I closed too, and my fire got the required damage!
We had won! - and our planes were fast enough to escape back to our lines!
Fun game, as always! - Just sad that Rhod went down in flames, unlucky!
Wings of Glory usually provides a fun game but only in small doses, as far as I am concerned....once or twice a year is probably my preferred frequency! This was a slightly different scenario...which also keeps things interesting.
ReplyDeleteWe are the same! We couldn't do it terribly often, but its a good quick choice when plans for something else fall flat!
