Refight of the Battle of Adys (256 BC)

Today, we went to the 1st Punic War, with the first battle, Adys for Consul Regulus. Although information on this battle is sketchy, I did my best to recreate the terrain.

As Phil was ill, I got Tony as my sub commander of the Carthaginian army, Lawrence got to be Regulus and the Romans!

The table at startup, Romans to the left. The Carthaginians were the attackers, once again, the players chose the historical side of the table!

I led the Carthaginian left with 2 units of Punic Horsemen, some Numidian cavalry and some slingers.
I also had the left centre, with the Punic Infantry, some Greek Hoplites, and some unenthusiastic Spanish!
Tony had the African Spearmen, with more holidaying Spanish!
On our far right, Tony had some Greek archers, Balearic slingers, and those Libyan Javelinmen who had failed to do anything for me last game!
Facing the Punic Cavalry, Lawrence placed his Roman Equites, Allied Cavalry and a unit of Leves.
In the centre he had his Legions.
All Pila armed Hastati and Principes after the Pyrrhic wars.
On his left he had the rest of his Leves.
I began by advancing my cavalry, trying to swing my Numidians round the flank. Lawrence tried to charge but failed multiple times!!!
His Leves swarmed through the woods, immune to the Punic archers and slingers.
The 2 battle lines awaited events on their flanks.
My Commander charged the Allied cavalry and broke them, taking only light losses themselves!
My other unit hit the Roman cavalry, beating them and killing their Hero!
The Numidians had to be satisfied keeping tabs on the Leves.
The Legions saw what was happeing to their flank and expanded their front line.
Otherwise the battle lines rested in place.
Tony was very aggressive with his light troops, but they failed to hit anything, even the Balearics underperformed!
Finally, I beat the Roman cavalry, though I now had a Stamina loss on both of my Heavy Cavalry units.
Again, the Libyan javelinmen broke and ran without achieving anything!!!
The Leves that had supported the cavalry had taken excess hits and were weak, so my Numidians rode them down.
On Tony's wing, the Leves were threatening to overwhelm his light troops, so I suggested he use his Spanish to support them.
The Spanish caught a Leve unit which failed to evade, and routed them easily.
On my left, I had to get through the Legions so charged a Principes unit.
Lawrence had advanced his Legions so I charged with my Punic infantry.
The Romans all got in and in3 out of 4 combats Tony managed to get 2 hits from 12 dice! - a disaster!
Sadly, the Spanish refused to charge again!
My cavalry beat the Principes and drove them back.
My Punic infantry faired better, winning 1 and drawing the other, not bad against Legionarii!
Tony's African spears were doing ok on their left, mostly.
But the other 2 units did so badly, they were at 3 damage and the Romans still had their 'Spears as Tribute' (IE no damage!)
Still, Tony's lights were failing to deal with the Leves!
Tony lost one of his spear units...
...then another!
Fortunately, his left hand unit beat their Roman opposition!
Finally, Tony got his Spanish to charge again, but they were destroyed!
A third Spearman unit broke too.
My Punic infantry broke a Roman unit too!
Sadly my second unit of Punic Infantry broke and ran!
Finally, my Punic cavalry destroyed that Principes unit without taking any more damage!
Just in time to see Lawrence roll a blinder and almost broke my Hoplites!!!
I was still doing ok in the left centre with my Punic infantry.
The Romans had made a hole in Tony's wing and he got round the flank of the last victorious African spear unit.
The Balearic slingers got surrounded and attacked from 2 sides...
...The last Spear unit broke too!
Whoo- an eclipse? Nah, just a sunbeam!
Lawrence kindly acted as a sunshade! my Punic infantry broke those Legionarii!
Bye Bye Hoplites!
That was the end! I was -1 Rep and Lawrence +1.

Fun game though, so really, we all won! even though poor Tony got his flank annihilated! At least the result was historical too!!!
