Today, before having a week off next week, we had a return to the American Revolution (AWI), using my rules.
It all started well as the Americans got the Initiative, though I only got the standard deployment zone to deploy in, and the British got to choose the Table side.
The depolyment at game start.
I had the Virginians on my right, supported by Light Infantry - as there were woods there.
To their left, the Maryland and Delaware contingent.
New Jersey held the left centre.
On my left I had 2 Additional Continental regiments supported by my Dragoons, more Light Infantry and Militia in reserve.
The Hessians faced my Virginians.
The British held the hill and took the centre and right.
The British Right was pretty good, Grenadiers, Light Infantry and the 17th Light Dragoons.
The Farm was a hindrance to both sides!
My left got moving well, I advanced my Continentals and sent my Lights to occupy the Farm.
I wasn't keen to attack in the centre as I doubted I could take the hill.
Only my front line of Virginians advanced, as did one unit of Light Infantry.
To my surprise the Germans deployed their second line to extend their line.
The British had a Brave, Competent Commander in Chief (Clinton?) who was helping the British deploy quickly.
As his light Cavalry and Infantry advanced quickly to contest the farm, Phil, too, pushed his Grenadiers and line from the second line out to support them.
Back on my right, I got the rest of my wing advancing, the failure to command had slowed my attack.
My Virginians drove off the Hessian Feldjägers, I hoped they would be driven into the front of the German Musketeers, allowing me to engage them at advantage.
On my left, I had hoped my Continentals would catch the British marching, but I had misjudged their discipline!
I retreated them quickly, but the British Light Infantry charged them (they were just in range) - and my Continentals made it to safety in front of the Militia.
My Light Infantry had reached the fence, where they would be able to fight the British Light Infantry on equal terms.
The Virginians were still driving back the Feldjäger, but I had to watch the right as another Jäger unit threatened my flank if I advanced too fast without Light Infantry support.
Both centres contented themselves with an artillery duel.
Lawrence withdrew his Feldjägers efficiently, so I had to attack the Hessians straight on, my first volley was...adequate. the 2 regiments at the end of their line retreated - but soon rallied and returned to the line.
The Hessians began to enfilade my left as we traded volleys.
I withdrew my left regiment to match them.
I was just about holding my own in the fire-fight...at this point.
The Hessians pushed more regiments forward and they soon got the advantage.
I, of course rolled a '1' for morale, and my Virginian front line retreated - disorganising the whole wing!
On my left, the British had taken the farm by assault, and they brought their Grenadiers up in support!
I could see how things were going, my attack had failed and my right close to collapse, so I called the retreat.
Ah well, the British line extension worked well! I wonder if I should have been brave and attacked along the line?
