Maybe this time?

Today, we had another American Revolution game at the club as Andy was with us again for the last time till probably June! - and he likes his AWI!

Its surely time for an American victory, isn't it, so lets see how today's game went!

Amazingly, My Washington got Initiative again, though it rather favoured the Brits, as they got to choose which side to deploy on.

Andy played the Hessians, and Phil the British, as Lawrence and Phillip were off playing 'Lion Rampant' on another table.

The battlefield for today, I keep rolling for a farmhouse!!!!

I deployed my Virginia regiments, so badly mauled last game, on the left behind a large wood, they were supported by Militia...and the 2nd Continental Light Dragoons.
In the centre, I had my New Jersey Continentals, again supported by Militia.
My right was strong, with 3 lines of Continentals.
Andy's Hessians deployed in a long line, with 4 Battalions ready to extend his line.
In their centre, the Guards and Grenadiers made a strong first line, supported by ordinary regiments of foot.
On their right, the vaunted British Light Infantry, supported by the 42nd and 71st Highlanders and the 17th Light Dragoons.
I started, but only got 2 regiments of Virginians moving, I had intended for these to outflank the wood, but had to push them forward instead to counter the British lights.
My centre had a 'Forlorn Hope' of a single regiment of Riflemen, nothing else advanced!
My right got a unit of Light Infantry going forward, but nothing else! - What a dreadful first turn!
The Hessians had no such problem, they were moving in no time!, the British too got several units moving.
The second turn, I got my main body of Virginians moving as well as my Light Dragoons.
My Riflemen began skirmishing at long range with the British Lights who had beaten me to the farm.
On the other wing I tried to get 'the bounce' on the Hessian Feldjägers, but they opened fire effectively at long range...
...my Light Infantry panicked and fled!, what heroes!
I was still trying to get my 3rd line troops to extend my right wing, but their slow manoeuvering was making things difficult! My Heavy gun battery was shooting, but not doing any damage on the advancing nine-pins, sorry,- Hessians!
At the farm the British Light Infantry charged my Riflemen, who surprisingly held their ground!...
...and to everyone's surprise, soundly beat the British!
The Riflemen were so shocked they didn't pursue!
On the other wing, my Light Dragoons nearly caught the British lights still manoeuvering, but they wisely rallied back into good order.
My Virginians began to enter the wood.
In the centre, my New Jersey and Maryland troops advanced.
That 3rd line was still making heavy progress.
My New Jerseys shot the crew of the guns supporting the Guards.
But the volley from my Continentals was high and caused virtually no damage!
The British elites stepped forward and delivered a crushing volley at short range!
2 regiments routed, I am not surprised!, The Marylanders gun destroyed the gun supporting the Grenadiers, I am not known as the 'Artillery Sniper' within our little group for nothing!
Finally, the British and American Light Dragoons clashed!
My men fought well but were outclassed!
The British pursued my surviving Dragoons - sweeping away some of my Riflemen en route.
My centre was looking vulnerable, but the New jerseys facing the guards were holding their ground well.
Andy's advance was slowed by his own Feldjägers!
He finally marched them off to the flank, leaving his Grenadiers free to attack.
In the centre, those magnificent riflemen shot the crew off a third British gun!
How long could my brave Continentals stand against the Guards?
The British Grenadiers pushed onto their flank. I was happy that my 2 broken regiments managed to rally in my rear, though they were too shot up to do much.
The Hessians advanced and fired, causing casualties along my front line, who consequently did not fire back effectively.
In the centre the brave New Jersey Continentals were finally wiped out.
On my left the Virginians were getting nowhere, as the Scottish out-maneuvered them.
My centre now had only shattered regiments, and Militia.
My right was losing against the Hessians.

There was nothing for it but to cede the day again, I had needed luck, but Phil got it where it mattered again!...I do hold my hands up though, I put my powerful Virginians on the left behind a wood, instead of reinforcing my centre against the British Guards and Grenadiers.

The dice gods laugh at me!

Playtesting Fantasy (2)

Today, as its a Bank Holiday in most of the UK for Easter, I either wanted to paint figures or try out my modifications to the Fantasy rules I have been writing.

Game wins!

I decided to re-do the last scenario with the same forces but a slightly changed 'dungeon'... so easy to do with my Warlock tiles!

Conan had long since given up worrying over his beloved Valeria, as she recovered from the injuries she had suffered in the last attempt to rescue Princess Rhealta from the Temple of Set.

Word had it that the Princess had been taken south to Shem by the followers of Set...and no doubt felt safer there. Conan, as a Barbarian, was untroubled by the many tales he had heard of that land, his sword had dealt with worse!

When Valeria was well, Subotai and Conan headed south to complete their task.

The Shemitic Temple of  Set

Conan, Subotai and Veleria crept towards the silent gate of the temple.
Conan pushed the doors inwards...
...No guards.
Conan, as silently as a Panther might, entered the hall.
He signalled to Valeria that all was clear.
His entrance dislodged a Portal marker watching the door, which moved back.
Conan moved forward cautiously, not giving himself away in the semi dark.
Subotai covered the flank as he and Valeria moved quickly but silently through the hall.
The Portal marker returned to its first position as Subutai had got within 5" of it.
Conan moved to a doorway on his left.
Slipping through it they entered another room with a subterranean well.
That Portal Marker moved ahead of the Adventurers.
Conan led as they went through the door on the far side of the well room, still no guards had appeared.
The Portal marker fell back again, to join another in the Great Hall.
Conan peered quickly into the Hall, still no alarm had been sounded.
They moved past several strange statues.
The Portal markers went further back in the hall.
As a new turn started, these became active!
I threw a 5, which meant...
2 Guards came out of the corner room.
Seeing the Intruders, they stopped, fingering their weapons.
Conan and Valeria moved towards them while Subotai stretched his bow...the guard parried the arrow with his shield.
New turn, Another 5!
4 more Guards joined the first two!
Subotai pulled his bow again...
Even though he only beat the Guard by 1, his weapon skill killed his target!
One of the Guards fell back...
The new four advanced!
Conan and Valeria didn't wait to be encircled, but attacked.
Subotai slung his bow and drew his own sword.
The first attack only saw one Guard wounded by Valeria, Conan's opponent dodged back!
More Guards appeared!
Conan killed one, Valeria took both of her opponents down!
Even more Guards came from the back gate.
Subotai charged in, but it was beginning to look like numbers would overwhelm them.
Subotai and Conan killed their opponents, Valeria, fighting several, only forced her frontal opponent to recoil.
Two more Guards moved in to join the party!
Valeria withdrew between 2 statues, to avoid being surrounded, Conan took on two!
Conan's swordplay was too much for his opponents, Valeria was slashing at any Guard that came close, Subotai had to avoid a spear thrust.
Valeria had most of the Guards occupied, so Conan was in a good position to help Subotai.
'Crom! -MORE reinforcements!'
Conan moved to crush the newcomers, Subotai and Valeria were also fighting heavy odds.
Conan's move dislodged the Portal Markers from the gate back to an unexplored storeroom.
Valeria was getting outflanked!
She drove her frontal attacker back and turned to face her rear, Conan killed his two with ease! - Subotai wounded his.
Conan ran to help Subotai, Valeria was fighting like a wildcat!
Conan asked Valeria if she needed any help, she gave him a look which would curdle milk!
That storeroom produced four more Guards!
Conan let Subotai help Valeria.
Valeria ended up helping Subotai!
At this point, the arrival die was a '1', which meant no more reinforcements this turn!
Conan took 2 on while Valeria and Subotai only had to deal with one each, this was the way Conan liked it!
The Portal Markers had fallen back again as Valeria got too close.
Valeria easily disposed of her man, and Conan had his blood up!
Two new guards came from the rear...
Valeria went to deal with them, and Subotai fought the last of the other group, Conan took the opportunity to look in the corner room.
As the door opened he saw the Princess, a Fakir with a snake, and a blind woman. Conan stepped through the door.
Valeria an Subotai were keeping the Guards off his neck.
The old woman waved a hand and Conan was driven back through the door!
'Crom, she's a witch!'
Subotai had killed his enemy, so Conan called him over.
Readying his sword, he started a charge into the room again...
Valeria finished off the Guardsmen, and wiped her blade.
Conan was again thrown back like a rag doll 'Now' he shouted
Subotai's arrow was true, the witch no more!
The Fakir gathered his snake and moved its head towards the princess, who screamed!
Conan charged, I got a 6 for charge distance
Just enough!
Conan's sword cut both snake and Fakir down (Had the Fakir won, Conan would have been bitten by the snake!)
Valeria had their backs, just as well, as two more guards attacked.
Subotai shut and locked the back doors, while Conan smashed the chain holding the Princess!
Valeria was enjoying herself!
Not so the Guards!
Conan emerged with the Princess "Lets get out of here!"
The last Guard fell back from Valeria's blade.
Conan: "Go ahead, I will bring the Princess!"
Valeria approached the guard, covered by Subotai.
He fell back through the doorway.
Valeria looked past the man, he seemed to be alone.
The Guard charged as Valeria came to the door.
His courage didn't save him!
The Portal Markers had been driven further back.
Conan again led the way, passing the Princess to Valeria.
He moved down the hallway, covered by Subotai.
We were lucky, a '2' wasn't enough to get any more Guardsmen.
Conan advanced to dislodge the Markers.
They went into the Gateroom.
Subotai went round the flank.
The Portal Markers were corralled into a small space.
Conan and Subotai advanced together.
The way was clear!
Conan opened the doors.
The Princess was on her way home to her father!
Well, that seemed to work ok, (We were lucky not to get overwhelmed a couple of times - thanks to a couple of '1's on the Arrivals dice which is an automatic no arrivals)....That was fun!
