Today, we were back at the club after a 2 week break, and we returned to Oathmark, which we haven't played for several months!!!
We diced up a Chance Encounter, so had 3 units on table each and could try to get 3 more on table each turn, the winner being the one who had 4 units within 12" of the enemy table edge at the end of any turn.
The table at game start, Phil and Rhod on the left obviously trying to focus their strength against my wing!
I got my spellcaster and Warriors (with my General!) on.
The enemy had 2 spellcasters and some Goblin bows on.
Lawrence had 2 units on, both melee units.
Rhod got some of his Dark Elf bowmen on table.
They had arrived an Ogre, but Lawrence's spellcaster fireballed it, shaking it. (I had diced double 8 during Initiative, and the poor Ogre had a bad tum-tum too.)
I began to set up my forces in a defensive formation.
Lawrence was moving to outflank the enemy and get to the other side of the table!
His Magic user got a second fireball on the Ogre, and it panicked, leaving the table lightly toasted!
Rhod put a smokescreen up to screen off my shooty troops.
My magic user cast a smoke spell of his own...
...and screened my Orcses from the mass of Gobbo archers coming through the woods.
Another turn over...
Everyone was on table now.
The smoke in front of me disappeared, just as the Elves arrived!
They began shooting!
Even my Warriors took heavy losses.
The second Elf unit joined in...having been 'Glamoured' to the centre last turn!
More great die rolling from Rhod!
I turned my Warriors to retreat, they couldn't take much more damage!
Lawrence went past Rhod's smokesreen.
We were getting a sort of stable front.
My Spellcaster put the smoke back in front of my centre.
Lawrence's lead unit got shot from the Elves, and were shaken.
Oddly, now, a unit of pretty Orcs arrived on Lawrence's side of the table, they were, we were assured, Goblin slave slingers!!!
At the end of another turn, things were again stable for both sides.
It seemed the enemy were using the Elf archers to hold the centre.
And the slaves to hold the left!
Another smoke disappeared, and Lawrence's archers got hit by those Elves.
Curse them! they had been enhanced with Mystic shields and / or Trueflight.
Lawrence's bowmen were disordered.
Lawrence sent a unit of Orcs to get the slingers, but they got a lucky hit on their attackers.
I was safe behind my smoke.
Lawrence decided to push forward and try to sweep the archers away!
Phil seemed happy securing a wood!
The Elves prepared to defend against Lawrence's attack.
Those slingers were happy just glaring at the Orcs!
Lawrence got his Archers back in order and they shot.
...and managed to kill two of the Elves! - softening them up before Lawrence's Goblins arrived.
Lawrence's Spellcaster...
...got a Fireball on the second unit too.
The first unit of Elves now peppered Lawrence's Goblins, shaking them.
They were then 'Glamoured' to safety behind their friends.
Amazingly, Phil threw 3 10s and mangled the Orcs facing them!
Phil advanced his Goblin archers through the woods.
...and hit my Warriors who had decided to attack in support of Lawrence.
At turn end again...
I had pushed my front line through the smoke, hoping I would win the initiative next turn.
I won the Initative, my General and the last remaining Warrior attacked the shaken elven bowmen and broke them, but my General was now alone!
Not often you see Elves legging it?!
Using Command, my soldiers charged the enemy Warriors, and even though we were even, Phil beat my dice!...
... I was driven back into the smoke!
The Smoke had gone after 5 turns, leaving my Orcs to take a mass of Goblin bowfire!
I moved my Orc Archers to support them...
I only got a single casualty, but they were Disordered by it!
The Elf archers now shot Lawrence's Shaken Goblins...
...and they routed!
My General was still intact...what to do?
My Orcs on my left advanced in a forlorn attack, being stopped and shaken by the massed Goblins.
My Spellcaster failed another Fireball, maybe he should stick to smoke!
Phil moved his linebreakers to sweep away my Orcs.
Lawrence was unable to charge those pesky slingers, who had already killed more than they were worth!!!
My General surprised everyone by turning and charging the flank of a unit of Orc Warriors, and as it had been shaken it now broke!
The Goblins shot another Orc from my brave flank unit!
I wheeled back, removing my Disorder.
Lawrence finally got a good charge in and mangled the slingers for no loss!
No surprise, my General was shot down by the Elves before he could attack them too!!!
My Orcs now attacked the Archers and beat them back.
Phil's Linebreakers wheeled to destroy my unbreakable Orc unit!
Lawrence's Spellcaster now got a clear shot...
...Ooo, look, an enemy Spellcaster....
Kapooof!
My Archers now peppered the Linebreakers.
They were Disordered...and thus, vulnerable.
Another turn end...the Elven archers had been 'Glamoured' behind my Orcs.
I moved my Spellcaster round the smoke to try a Fireball on the archers, but I failed! The Elves wounded my Spellcaster in return! (My Orcs had moved through the smoke Rhod had helpfully put in front of me!, so could not be shot)
My Orc Archers got a shot on the Disordered Linebreakers before they could act and broke them too!
The slingers killed another Orc!
Lawrence's Spellcaster launched another fireball...
...the Elven Spellcaster was singed!
My wounded Spellcaster finally got a Fireball off and virtually demolished the Elf Bow unit!
At this turn end, I had my Orc soldiers on the enemy side...
...so we had 4 valid units within 12" of the enemy table edge!
We had won! - a tough nail biting battle to be sure. Poor Phil hadn't realised the winning conditions, though I don't think he could have got past me in truth, but we will never know for sure!!!
