Today, for a change, we got the old American Revolution troops out for a bash. I was given the Americans again while Phil took the British and Lawrence the Hessians. We were expecting Rhod to arrive, which he did for turn 2! - where he took my right wing.
Amazingly, I rolled a higher initiative than the British, but only by a little, so the British got to choose which side of the table to deploy on...
Yep, they took the side with the farm and hill, which would have suited the Americans just fine!!!
The British were facing my right, and had 2 Light bob battalions, the 17th Light Dragoons and a lot of good line regiments including the 42nd.
Their centre had 2 battalions of Grenadiers and 4 more line regiments.
The Hessians, with 2 units of Jägers.
My left had the New Jersey Continentals with 2 units of Light Infantry.
In the centre were the Maryland and Independent regiments, with some militia.
On the right, I had the Virginia regiments supported with 3 gun batteries! - and 2 more light infantry regiments.
We randomised the command qualities as normal, and, as usual, the British got 2(!) competents!- a Brigadier and their C-in-C.
I got a Competent C-In-C too, but all my brigadiers were average.
My command naturally failed in turn 1. My left only got their Medium gun battery on the hill!
On my right, I got Sheldon's horse and the 2 Light Infantry units out to the flank.
The 'Grand Battery' opened up!
They disordered a British gun battery.
As the Jägers advanced on my hill I managed, ever so slowly to get the Continentals moving, and their Light Infantry. The gun fired but failed to affect the Germans.
In my centre, I still hadn't got all my units under command, and unwilling to advance higgledy piggily I stayed in position.
Rhod had arrived, and sent his cavalry forward.
The British left was deploying as well as regulars do...only the 17th Light Dragoons were still taking tea!
Phil began to infest the farm, and hill.
The Germans were advancing slowly, in mass.
A unit of Jägers were advancing to harass my gun crew.
The British Light infantry advanced to engage Rhod.
I had advanced the NJ Continentals to push back one Jäger unit, but the other was on their flank.
Phil had a powerful attack developing on Rhod's wing.
Back on my left, my gun cannistered the Jägers effectively!
The Jägers fell back, stunned.
This allowed my Light infantry to advance on them.
The second Jäger unit now stepped forward and shot up one of my regiments!
Rhod greeted the British with fire, which didn't affect them much, just disordering them.
The British Lights advanced on the guns, but were halted by fire.
Their other battalion hit an American one, but Rhod's dice were not good today!
The first unit Routed, and the British followed up into the unit behind!
This unit Routed too!, but at least they put up a brave fight!
The Hessians were attacking the hill now on my left.
A sort of overview of the centre.
Two Virginia regiments had got through the wood and deployed behind the guns, just in time as the British were pressuring the guns.
Phil's gun had deployed, and immediately damaged a Virginia regiment!
On my left, my New Jerseys were losing the firefight.
Even the remnants of that Light Infantry unit barreled into Sheldon's Horse. Another poor roll from Rhod saw them Routed too!
Every light unit on our right chased off table!
Fortunately, the Grand Battery was holding its own, supported by the Virginians.
Whoo, my New Jerseys had killed a Hessian Fusilier regiment stand!
The Jägers were winning now, somehow!
On the right, a magnificent volley from the guns fair shredded the British line!
The Light Infantry there fled!
The guns continued to play on the British line...
In a desperate attempt to push the Hessians back, my New Jersey's stepped forward to short range, but failed to strike a killing blow!
The Hessians rallied, and devastated my New Jerseys!
The British on our right had fallen back in disorder, but the second line advanced and blasted a Virginia regiment.
They fell back into the wood.
My New Jerseys had initially held, just, but as more Hessian regiments arrived, they were shattered by fire.
They broke, and I am not surprised!
We had to stop at this time and surveyed the battlefield, and decided the British had got a winning draw, as both sides still had reserves and continue the fight.
