Today we had a game of Midgard with just Lawrence, Tony and myself, so I brought down my Akkadians and Lullubi (Zagros Highlanders) to see if I could squeeze a victory from the poor Lullubi, who had nothing heavier than Armour 2!
Lawrence fancied the Akkadians, I the Lullubi, so Tony diced which side he would join, and he became an Akkadian!. My Lullubi got to be attackers so the Akkadians had choice of side. We both diced for 'Omens', and Lawrence got a Rep Point, I diced a 6 AGAIN, just like the first time I used my Lullubi, so got 3 Rep, but another of my heroes got to be 'Fated'.
(NB: sorry the lighting made some of my pics a bit yellow green!)
The table at game start, Lullubi to the left, with strong Light Infantry on either wing.
I began by sending my lights to take out the single Akkadian slinger unit in the wood.
On my left, I sent a swarm of lights to try and outflank the Akkadian right.
The Akkadians sent their battle carts and light infantry (NIM , which means 'Flies' in Akkadian, quite appropriate for skirmishers!)
The Akkadian centre moved forward.
Their Battle carts were kept in reserve...leery of getting shot up by my archers.
Back on my right, my lights pushed forward, but were unable to damage the NIM.
My lights on the left were similarly ineffective, only slowing the NIM's advance.
On the right, Lawrence sent his Formed Archers to help his left, and they quickly damaged my slingers, and the 'Fated' Hero with them too!!!
The same happened on my left, where the Akkadian NIM devastated one of my Archer units and wounded the other 'Fated' Hero with them!!!
My lights managed to outflank the NIM slingers in the wood, but I brought up two warbands in support.
Both centres seemed happy to glare at each other.
I brought 2 warbands behind my skirmishers to counter the Battle carts, who were threatening my light infantry.
My light infantry finally drove the NIM from the wood.
Unfortunately, I failed 2 evade attempts and got caught by the Battle carts and an Akkadian Spear unit!!!
I had tried to damage the NIM with my archers and slingers with no effect, but when they shot back my slingers dissolved!
Back on the right despite being partially in a wood, the Akkadian archers killed my Hero with an arrow!
No surprise, the Akkadian Battle carts treated my Javelinmen as a 'speed bump'!
The Spearmen failed to destroy my archers! - this wouldn't last...
My warband caught the Akkadian Formed Archers!, behind them, my Javelinmen caught those cursed NIM slingers.
In the centre, my Commander in Chief used his 'With me!' to get a lot of my warbands to charge in concert.
My poor left wing was unable to do anything.
Those brave archers finally broke and ran from the Akkadian spearmen!
In the combat in the centre, Lawrence got the double ravens, so was wounded.
I had 2 Impetuous units against the Royal Guards, so surely I would win, right?
At least my warband destroyed the Akkadian archers!
The Akkadians were breaking through my centre, and there was nothing I could do to stop them!
Those pesky NIM slingers finally got caught and destroyed, but still managed to damage my Javelinmen!
The Akkadian Battle Carts smashed my Archers, and the unit who was in support range after the front unit had evaded, also broke! Disaster!
In the centre, one of my Warbands was beaten easily by a spear unit.
On my left, I just had two Warbands to face the Akkadian right.
The Akkadians had broken through my centre, a critical moment.
The Akkadian second line hit and beat my Warband after their victory over the Formed Archers.
My light infantry charged them in rear, giving my Warband a fighting chance!
In parts, my Warbands were matching the Akkadians.
On my left, I matched the Battle Carts with my warriors.
I beat one of the Akkadian spear units in the centre.
Next to them I beat the Royal Guard, but my victorious unit broke too!
One of the two Warbands I had fighting the one spear unit was destroyed, at least the other was still fresh.
Another double death, one of my Warbands and an Akkadian spear unit.
The Akkadian NIM destroyed one of my Warbands on my left with shooting!
My other Warband killed the Battle Carts though!
In the centre, an Akkadian 2nd line unit charged my supporting unit, and we fair gutted each other.
The Akkadian C-in-C had held my C-in-C after the royal guard had broken, and a spear unit had come to his rescue! My Hero fought well but was overwhelmed and killed!
My remaining Warband in the 2 on 1 fight made short work of the Akkadian spear unit.
This was the end of turn 5, and we were both out of Rep!
Only on the right did I have a coherent force.
At the final count the Akkadians won...-4 to -5!!!
