Today, we returned to the first game we had of Midgard, using the 2nd Punic War lists from the Mogsymakes site.
I was wanting to try out some ideas for modifying Numidian cavalry, who I never felt played 'right'. I had removed the 'Drilled' trait and added 'Marksman' and a custom trait 'Swift' (Evade rolls only fail on a 1 (D6))
I got Tony as my companion player and the Romans, Phil and Lawrence would have the Carthaginians.
The Carthaginians got to be attackers...
The layout at game start, sorry most of the pics are darkish, the light was confusing my camera!
I had the Roman right, with Allied and Roman cavalry, Velites, and Hastati.
Tony had the majority of the Legions.
Facing me, the whole Carthaginian cavalry force.
Their centre was Spanish and African spears, backed up by Gauls.
Their right had the elephants. Their excellent Balearic slingers supported the centre and right.
The game started with the Numidians sweeping round my flank.
They were joined by the Punic cavalry.
The infantry advanced slower.
Their Elephants headed for the woods!
I responded aggressively, my Allied cavalry charged a Punic cavalry unit.
Tony put his Veles into the wood, his legionaries advanced slowly.
My Allied horse pushed back the Punics!
Unfortunately the other Punic cavalry unit and one of the Numidian units charged my Roman cavalry, this was not going to end well. The other Numidians flanked my Allied horse.
The Allies broke the Punics, but were destroyed by the Numidians.
As I said, the Roman cavalry battle didn't end well! I had moved 2 Maniples to act as a block, fortunately!
Tony's attack failed to make much headway.
The Punic cavalry that had beaten my Roman horse charged my Velites, who evaded, so the Punics hit my Legionarii.
The supporting Numidians destroyed my Veles with Javelins.
Although damaged themselves, my Hastati broke the second Punic cavalry unit.
Tony had unfortunately let 2 Carthaginian infantry units attack one Principes unit, which broke in short order.
The Numidians now hit my victorious Legionarii in flank...
My men broke.
I charged one Spanish unit, but was charged by a second and driven back.
Tony's legions started losing to the massed Carthaginians.
Even the Triarii started breaking.
My remaing Velites had charged in support of my overwhelmed Hastati, but could not stop them breaking. Another of my Hastati units charged the other Spanish unit.
However, this was the end of turn 4, the Carthaginians had 12 left, the Romans -10!!!
Ah well!
I think, although not a good test for the Numidians, it showed my suggested changes to their stats did not give the correct results (sigh!)
Back to drawing board, and raise another Roman army!
